Make home improvements that matter — three projects that have excellent returns on investment

If you’ve been thinking about making some home additions or improvements, you’re not alone. New homeowners dropped about $19 billion on house additions and home improvements between 2012 to 2013. According to Houzz, the trend continued, as the site’s research found that up to 47% more people than last year were looking to make more home additions and improvements in order to resell their houses at a higher price.

And for good reason, too. Remodeling a house almost always provides an ROI of between 80% to 90% in just the first couple of years.

However, not all home additions and improvements are created the same. Some provide better ROIs than others, so if you’re looking for home additions that yield promising returns on investment, consider some of these home remodeling ideas.

Attic Bedrooms

If you’re planning on turning your attic into a bedroom, you can expect to recoup 73% of your investment. That being said, these home additions are also very expensive, costing tens of thousands of dollars. It’s still a very wise investment if you have the money for it.

Kitchens

Kitchen remodels have an ROI of 66% on average. These are also incredibly important when trying to increase the resale value of your home, since the kitchen is one of the very first things potential buyers want to look at. Be careful when planning your kitchen remodel, though. Some kitchens may not be in bad shape, and may only need a face lift, while other kitchens may require full scale renovations.

Bathrooms

Bathroom remodels have an ROI of 62% on average, but can be a little bit tricky since many potential buyers are looking for bathrooms that go above and beyond their expectations. This means that if you’re going to invest in one of these house additions or improvements, you can’t put the bare minimum into it.

If you’re going to improve your home, you may as well make the improvements that will pay you back the most. If you have any questions about these home additions and improvements, feel free to ask in the comments.
